How to Prepare for a Surgery at AHI?
We understand that preparing for surgery can be overwhelming, but we are here to support our patients and their family members every step of the way. Preparing in advance can help you avoid stressful situations when you are actually at the hospital.
Although patients must follow their doctors’ instructions for preparing for surgery, here are some general guidelines that apply to those who will be under general anaesthesia:
- Important Medication Instructions: Before surgery, some medications must be stopped and others started to make the surgery safer. This may be explained to the patient; if so, follow these instructions carefully. A Diabetes patient may need to adjust their treatment regimen before and after surgery. Instead of taking oral medications, injections might become necessary.
- Fasting: Patient will need to stop drinking and eating for a certain period of time before their surgery. This is to prevent complications that may arise from anaesthesia, if any.
- Personal Hygiene: To minimise the risk of infection, Patient may be asked to bathe or clean the area to be operated on and possibly shave it.
- Diagnostic Tests: Patient’s physician may ask them to undergo various Blood Tests, X-Rays, Electrocardiograms, or other procedures necessary for surgery.
- Bowel Preparation: In some cases, Patient may be asked to take an enema the evening before surgery to empty their bowels. Please check with your physician if this applies to you.
- Appearance: Do not wear makeup, nail polish, or eye contact lenses on the day of surgery. Patient should leave any valuables and jewellery at home, and advise the medical staff of any dentures or other prosthetic devices they may be wearing.
- What to Bring: To make the patient’s experience more comfortable and efficient, we recommend that they bring loose-fitting clothes to wear. All patients are required to bring in their Aadhar card, insurance information, and any previous medical records.
