CABG Surgery at Asian Heart Institute
CABG is recommended when coronary arteries are severely blocked, particularly in cases of multi-vessel blockage or when angioplasty is not the ideal option. The procedure restores healthy blood flow to the heart by using a graft—taken from the chest, leg, or arm. This graft is used to create a new route around the blocked artery. At Asian Heart Institute, our prime focus remains on safety, accuracy, and longevity of patient outcomes post Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting (CABG) procedure. Here, CABG is performed using advanced surgical techniques, including off-pump and minimally invasive approaches, which reduce complications and accelerate recovery. The top cardiac surgeons in India are providing dedicated heart care at AHI, supported by world-class infrastructure, advanced patient monitoring systems, and a highly trained support team. Why Choose AHI for CABG treatment in Mumbai

You need to prepare for CABG in AHI in the following ways:- You need to stop smoking days before the surgery.
- Your health history regarding your medications, implants, pregnancies, disorders (like bleeding disorders, diabetes, high blood pressure), and allergies will be reviewed.
- A thorough physical examination will be done. Certain blood tests, blood clotting tests, or other diagnostic tests will be advised.
- Do not eat or drink for 8 hours before the procedure, generally after midnight if the procedure is planned in the morning.
- You need to sign a consent form to provide permission to perform the surgery.
- You have to remove any jewelry or anything else that may interfere with the procedure.
- You need to wear a hospital gown and empty your bladder. Your care team will insert an IV (intravenous) line in your arm or hand.
- Electrodes will be attached to your body for perioperative monitoring to keep an eye on the real-time values of your vitals (heart rate, blood pressure, breathing, and blood oxygen level).
- You will lie straight on an operating table. Anesthesia will be administered.
- A breathing tube will be inserted into your neck.
- For on-pump CABG surgery, a heart–lung machine temporarily takes over the functions of your heart and lungs while the ventilator continues to manage your breathing.
- For off-pump CABG surgery, you will still be connected to a ventilator, which supports your breathing throughout the procedure.
- A catheter will be put inside your bladder for urine drainage. The surgical site’s skin is cleaned with an antiseptic solution.

FAQ
Patients are advised to undergo angiography and other diagnostic tests, such as PET Scan, Stress Thallium, Stress Echo, X-ray, Ultrasound, and blood/clotting tests, before undergoing CABG. Once the CABG is planned, you need to undergo blood analysis, chest X-rays, and an ultrasound. They must stop smoking, adjust medications, fast for eight hours, and complete consent.
At first, a vein or artery is taken from the leg or wrist as a graft. After this, a chest incision is made to open the sternum to expose the heart. In on-pump surgery, the heart is stopped and connected to a heart–lung machine, while in off-pump surgery, heart heart-lung machine is not required. The surgeon attaches the grafts below the blockages, checks blood flow, closes the sternum with wires, places chest drains, and applies sterile dressings to complete the procedure.
Caregivers can support the patient by helping them avoid stress and exertion before surgery and by staying available for counselling after the surgery regarding operative procedures and post-operative care. A family member or caregiver may have to stay in the hospital for patient care in the hospital for 5-7 days till discharge. During recovery, they should assist with wound care, ensure activity restrictions are followed, monitor for warning signs such as fever, swelling, breathing issues, or chest pain, and help the patient attend follow-up visits. They must assist in cardiac rehabilitation programs and support healthy lifestyle habits throughout the recovery period.
Following CABG, patients should maintain the cleanliness of the site of incision, adhere to dietary and medication guidelines, and refrain from strenuous activities until their doctor gives their approval. Any warning signs, such as fever, swelling of the legs, chest discomfort, or trouble breathing, should be reported right away. Light workouts can be done under strict medical supervision, that too only after a certain level of recovery. To ensure complete recovery and longevity, medically supervised cardiac rehabilitation should begin.
At Asian Heart Institute, the risk of fatal complications from coronary artery bypass surgery is less than 0.5%, making it an extremely safe procedure. In case the patient has diabetes, a recent stroke, renal or lung illness, or a weak heart, the associated risk increases. According to research, CABG has a nearly 98% overall success rate. CABG is not a cure for underlying heart disease. However, it efficiently increases longevity, improves symptoms like chest discomfort and shortness of breath, and lowers the risk of a heart attack. The risk of complications is somewhat higher when it is performed as an emergency procedure.
