Dr. Bhushan Thombare, DNB (Thoracic Surgery), DNB (General Surgery), is a highly experienced Thoracic Surgeon with over 21 years of cumulative surgical experience, specialising in Thoracic Oncology, Minimally Invasive Thoracic Surgery, and Lung Transplantation. At the Asian Heart Institute, he leads Thoracic Surgery and the hospital’s non-cardiac surgical efforts.
Dr. Thombare is India’s first National-Board-Certified Thoracic Surgeon from the nation’s first exclusive Thoracic Surgical Program. He served as a Specialist Senior Resident in the Surgical Oncology – Thoracic Oncology Department at Tata Memorial Hospital for nearly a year. He has received advanced international training at the University of Wien (Advanced Thoracic Surgery Fellowship), the Vienna–Toronto Lung Transplant Academy, and Shanghai Pulmonary Hospital (Uniportal VATS Fellowship).
Prior to joining Asian Heart Institute, Dr. Thombare served as Consultant Robotic & Minimally Invasive Thoracic Surgeon at Medanta – The Medicity, Gurgaon (2018–2020). He subsequently worked as Consultant Surgical Oncology – Thoracic Oncology at Max Super Speciality Hospital, Vaishali and Patparganj, while also serving as a Visiting Thoracic Surgeon at Max Super Speciality Hospital, Saket, and Max Smart Super Speciality Hospital, New Delhi (2021–2023). He has additionally been associated as a Visiting Minimally Invasive Thoracic Surgeon at Northern Railway Central Hospital, New Delhi.
He specialises in Robotic and Uniportal VATS procedures for Lung Cancer, Esophageal Cancer, Mediastinal Tumours, Chest Wall Tumour Resection and Reconstruction, and Lung Transplantation. He was part of the surgical team that performed the first successful Bilateral Lung Transplant at Apollo Indraprastha Hospital, Delhi, followed by three subsequent successful lung transplants.
Dr. Thombare has published extensively in peer-reviewed journals, authored invited textbook chapters, and received multiple national accolades, including the Best Video Presentation Award at AIIMS, New Delhi, and the Best Paper Award at the RIAGES Robotic Surgery Conference. He is an active member of the Indian Society of Thoracic Surgeons and regularly serves as faculty at leading national and international conferences.
