Some Vital Steps To Diagnose Hypertension

Hypertension, is commonly, known as high blood pressure. There are no signs or symptoms of the condition, and therefore is it also termed as silent disease. If this condition is not treated on right time then it may lead to serious health risks such as heart attack. There is only one way to keep a track of hypertension, it is by checking the blood pressure regularly. According to the study and what our doctors firmly believe in, men and women beyond the age of 40 should be constantly checking their blood pressure. If one finds increased pressure than normal, then it is better to consult a doctor immediately.

Diagnosing hypertension or high blood pressure

1. Get a sphygmomanometer. It is the device that is used to diagnose hypertension. It comes with an arm cuff, stethoscope, valve, dial, and a pump. Nowadays, there is a digital device as well that comes with an arm cuff and monitor.

2. Understand two important aspects of blood pressure – systolic pressure and diastolic pressure. Systolic is maximum pressure when heart transports blood to various parts of the body. Diastolic is minimum pressure in between when heart fills blood.

3. Blood pressure has 4 levels, they are:

  • Normal – When the measure is below the line of 120/80 mm Hg
  • Elevated – Here, diastolic is below 80 mm Hg and systolic goes somewhere between 120 and 129 mg Hg. This is not a good sign and one needs to take care of himself/herself.
  • Stage 1 of hypertension – Here, diastolic is between 80 and 89 mg Hg, while systolic is between 120 and 129 mm Hg. Better to consult a doctor.
  • Stage 2 of hypertension – Here, diastolic is 90 or above mm Hg, while systolic is 140 mm Hg or above. It is a serious level, consulting doctor immediately is a must.

The person diagnosing needs to have knowledge of both diastolic and systolic measurements are important. There are certain considerations to take care of before diagnosing. For instance, the patient is supposed to be in a relaxed state for about 15 to 20 minutes for the checkup. And, the patient should not be checked just after he or she consumes a meal.
